Furnace efficiency is rated in AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It's the share of the gas you buy that turns into heat in your house. A 96% AFUE furnace sends 96 cents of every gas dollar into your home and four cents up the flue. Most of the furnaces we pull out run at 80% or less, which means roughly a fifth of every heating bill was going outside.

DTE natural gas customers can claim a $200 rebate when they replace an older furnace with a 96% AFUE model. Your home has to be an existing single-family home of two units or fewer with its own gas meter, and the furnace has to be AHRI certified. Rebate funds are first come, first served, so DTE can close the program once the year's money is spent.
